Demyelinating
A degenerative process that erodes away the myelin sheath that normally protects nerve fibers.
As this pertains to CMT, demyelinating refers to a disease process that directly affects the peripheral nerve myelin, as opposed to the peripheral nerve axon. Type 1, Type 4, and X-Linked CMT are all considered to be demyelinating.
